US DOE - Green Ribbon Schools

Launched in 2011, the Department of Education's Green Ribbon Schools program is the federal government's first comprehensive green schools initiative, and it has tremendous implications for schools across the country. Earth Day Network is proud to havecollaborated with other leaders in the green schools movement and the Department of Education to make this initiative happen.
Green Ribbon Awards recognize public and private schools of all age levels that demonstrate dramatic gains in both environmental literacy and reducing their carbon footprint while improving learning conditions.
This exciting new program is invigorating and empowering schools nationwide for growing the 21st-century economy. By encouraging schools to apply for this award, powerful strides will be taken to ensure we meet our shared goal of greening America’s schools within a generation

The 2013 Honorees

The second annual U.S. Department of Education Green Ribbon Schools were announced on Earth Day. 78 schools received the Green Ribbon Award this year. The winners were selected from nominees from 32 state education agencies and the District of Columbia. Among the winners are 54 public schools, 10 private schools, 7 charter schools, 5 magnet schools, and 4 career and technical schools.  There are 40 elementary, 23 middle, and 19 high schools (several with various K-12 configurations). About 51% of the schools represent underserved populations.

Since 2011, this initiative has helped both public and private schools in becoming environmentally sustainable and have rewarded these institutes with the Green Ribbon Award which shows and suggests that these institutes are helping towards protecting our environment and helping ensuring sustainable resources for future generations. This award also ensures that the students have environmental literacy which is good to ensure environmental sustainability and knowledge of this problem.
